Friday

Friday fortunes

The day the week lets go.

Friday is the only day whose character changes completely partway through. In the morning it is still a working day. By late afternoon it has become something else, and everyone can feel the switch.

The readings here are written for the second half. They deal in accounting and release: small wins turning out to be the ones that built the week, the lightness you feel being earned rather than borrowed, the work being genuinely done. There is very little instruction in them, because Friday is not a day that needs instruction.

What Friday does need, and rarely gets, is the noticing. Most weeks close without anyone taking stock of what was in them — the thing gets finished and immediately replaced by the next thing. A reading that simply says the effort counted is doing something more useful on this day than on any other, because Friday is when it is still possible to remember what the effort was.

The Friday readings

These are the distinct readings written for Friday. The oracle varies the opening phrase and the closing line when it draws one, so the version you are given may be worded a little differently from the version here.
